From prehistory to antiquity
The numerous and rich prehistoric sites discovered in the Propriano area, including that of Filitosa, bear witness to the existence of settlements in the Sartenais-Valinco micro-region as early as the 6th millennium BCE, and right up to the Roman period.
The story
The commercial port began to modernise in the 19th century, when the road between Ajaccio and Bonifacio (surveyed in 1873) was built. Maritime trade flourished there to meet the growing demand for both freight and passenger transport.
The modern port
Today, the number of regular ferry services to the island has increased, and cruise lines have discovered it to be a welcoming port of call, set in a stunningly beautiful gulf at the heart of a micro-region boasting a rich and varied heritage that is sure to appeal to culture lovers.
